Somehow I blinked my eyes and now my baby has turned into a “big” kindergartener. Last night he was so excited he kept asking to try on his backpack “just ONE more time!”

We skipped naps yesterday hoping that he would be tired enough to fall asleep. Sometime around 9:30 pm we had to fuss at him to go stay in his bed and go to sleep. But in my heart I remember well how exciting the night before school is and I couldn’t help but be thankful that my “big boy” chose his only pair of footie pajamas to sleep in last night. It was such a sweet reminder that though he thinks he’s all grown up, he really is still a sweet baby boy.

Early this morning I woke him and he happily came out to eat breakfast. Then in his sweet groggy voice he said “it’s just SO early and SOOO bright!” Then it seemed like seconds later her was running circles around me ready to help pack his lunch and go to school!

He took the traditional first day of school pictures!

Then we took a picture in his class of 2026 shirt. I can’t wait to watch him grow into this shirt year after year. (Chris may have told me I was crazy while I was making this shirt. I assured him that I was allowed to be a little crazy, after all, I am sending my first born child to kindergarten!)

Today was early release and this momma was ready to pick him up at 1! I loved hearing him talk about much he already loves his new teacher and made lots of new friends (but he doesn’t know any of their names!). He loves everything about his new school and can’t wait to go back and do it all over again tomorrow!!

And bonus: He ate his entire ham sandwich at lunch today. That’s pretty huge in our world! Woot woot!!!

So tonight, we will go to Lane’s favorite restaurant, Don Pepe, and celebrate a wonderful first day of school! Tomorrow Lane gets to go back to school, then has a party for a new classmate, and he starts soccer too!! (Pray for his sweet teacher on Wednesday morning. Not sure if she’s taught a little zombie before, but I’m sure I will be dropping off one for her. I may need to send some more chocolate!)

Welcome to my crazy

All summer long, I have genuinely been excited about Lane starting Kindergarten and even more excited about Bethany starting pre-school. Lane had THE BEST preschool experience last year. I know beyond all doubt that he is ready for kindergarten and I was honestly probably a little too excited about 12 WHOLE HOURS a week kid-free. I was starting to feel a little like a heartless mom what with all my planning and dreaming of reading a book without interruption, or cleaning a house and it actually staying clean for more than 15 minutes. Maybe I could even make a phone call without someone tapping on my leg or go to the bathroom with out someone squeezing their little fingers under the door to say hi! Just as I thought, this sending kids off to school for a couple hours a week will be nice – that’s when I noticed it.

See at some point during the past two weeks ago, I realized summer was almost over. I needed to start getting organized, buy backpacks and lunch boxes, sign Lane up for soccer, decide if Bethany would do gymnastics this year, iron the first 2 weeks worth of school clothes, get the house cleaned, figure out what I need for school lunches, decide if Lane would ride the bus or be a car rider….Is your head spinning? Mine was. At some point when I was frantically scrubbing baseboards, because you know you can’t start school without sparkling baseboards, I realized that I had jumped on to the crazy train.

Then, the next day I went to Lane’s school and got this precious little letter on cutesy little paper.

I was standing there listening to one of my sweet teacher friends tell me what a great teacher Lane had. I was smiling and nodding but my stomach was dropping lower and lower. I realized how real this whole kindergarten thing is. Blah. Then the roller coaster started. My best friend and I talk daily. Her daughter is starting big school this year too.

One day we are encouraging each other and reminding each other that they are ready. The next day we are telling stories about our babies when they actually were babies (though they will always be our babies). Yep this is my crazy.

I never realized until this week how hard it is to let go even if it is just the tinies bit. I am daily reminding myself that as a parent my goal is for my kids to move from being 100% dependent upon me to being 100% dependent upon the Lord. and in order for that transition to take place I have to let go some, As I let go some, my faith and trust in the Lord grows because I’m trusting the Lord’s protection over one of my most prized possessions.

and yes I do know its just Kindergarten and I’m not sending him off to war. Go back to the title. This is the crazy train I’ve been on the past week. Stopping between knowing kindergarten is a good thing and stopping the crazy station where I just want to keep him home with me forever and ever.

Change is good. and our new season starts in exactly 4 days ready or not.

the laid-back boy and the toddler supermodel

Today was Lane’s 5 year check-up and Bethany’s 3 year check-up. (yes, I realize it’s over a month after their actual birthday but better late than never, right?) Lane did everything first today since he’s the big kid. He did his weight, height, blood pressure, vision and hearing screening like a champ. Then gladly chose his stickers.

…and then it was Bethany’s turn. I’m not sure if I’ve ever mentioned this but she HATES getting on the scales at the doctor. There is weeping, wailing, gnashing of teeth. Oh the drama. I finally took her to the bathroom and after a little “conversation” she managed to hop on the scale for a second. The height measurement went about the same. After moments like that I like to remind myself of her sweet giggles.

Lane is 3ft 6 in (45%) and 37 1/2 lbs (25%). This is right on track for him. Bethany is 3 ft 3 1/2 inches (95%) and 29 lbs (25%). Homegirl is very tall and skinny, my little toddler supermodel 🙂

Overall they had a great checkup. The only red flag that went up was Bethany’s tonsils. She apparently inherited my very large tonsils. Dr. A said not to be surprised if we need to take them out next summer.

Here are a couple of recent quotes/moments with the kids:

Bethany stared at me for a while then said : What is it?
    – a freckle
b: (gasp!) Can I touch it!?

Bethany has been obsessed with doctors for awhile. This weekend she kept running around the house yelling “I need a heartbeat! I con’t (said with an English accent) find it!” (translation: I need my stethoscope)

She has suddenly become VERY interested in princesses. She and Lane have started playing princess and prince and they go to the ball in her room and dance. Somehow I’m not sure their dancing is the same as Cinderella’s. (I’ll try to sneak a video of this. So precious!)

Lane talks non-stop about being a grown up now because he has flip-flops without the back strap. He has also started getting his jammies on and telling us good night if he is tired before bedtime. So grown. 🙂

    Lane’s Birthday

Monday, May 13th was Lane’s 5th birthday. I originally planned to tape balloons on his door like I did for Bethany. However, after he fell asleep I remembered that he has several of his favorite school projects taped to his bedroom door. So, I changed plans and just put balloons in the little hallway to his room. He was so excited when he woke up on his birthday!

He ran to the table and found all his little presents wrapped in superhero paper!

Then, he and Chris spent a good bit of time launching catapults and driving remote control cars.

For his birthday breakfast, I offered to fix ANYTHING he wanted but he chose a frozen waffle. So, we stuck a candle in the waffle and sang Happy Birthday!

Then, it was time to quickly hurry and get ready for school. Lane was so excited to take his special snack to school. What did he want…cake? cupcakes? nope, plain sugar cookies with NO sprinkles or icing. (he was very clear about that!) So, that’s what we did! Mom found some really cute cookies that had birthday pictures (They were just like the holiday cookies you bake with a flag, a snowman, a heart, etc) I had never seen them before! So we had those and true plain sugar cookies. Gigi came and surprised Lane at school during his special snack. Lane was thrilled! [On a side note, Bethany came with me to Lane’s classroom and she had a blast. She sat like such a big girl at the table with him. She was SO PROUD to be at school! She even jumped in on a couple of class pictures!]

    Sweet friends!
    and Bethany 🙂

…and one with Mrs. Kay, the best 4K teacher ever! Lane absolutely adores her!

After school we took Lane to Treetop Family Adventure. We had never been out there before. Lane and Bethany had a blast playing in the playground, bowling and

….”playing” miniature golf. Lane is in desperate need for his Papaw to come teach him how to golf. He has quite the unusual technique for hitting the golf ball!

We spent a VERY long time on this hole. It had four levels. The kids had a blast taking turns dropping the ball in the hole and watching where it would roll out on the next level.

After Treetop, Lane chose where he wanted to eat for his birthday dinner. He chose Don Pepe. Can you tell we like Mexican food just a little bit!

Overall, it was a wonderful day spent celebrating my sweet boy! We love you Lane!

    I’m all growin’ up

    Happy Birthday Lane!

You are 5 years old now! It seems like it was just yesterday that you were a tiny little fella leaving the NICU but as you reminded me yesterday ….

You are “5 years old and all growin’ up!”

You are so sweet and kind. I pray daily that you keep you sweet, kind heart always. You are so thoughtful. You freely give those you love hugs and sugar! I cherish them and dread the day you are too cool to give hugs and sugar. But never fear, I will be that mom that keeps giving you hugs and sugar and telling you how much I love you.

You love to laugh and make others laugh. You love telling knock-knock jokes. Right now a typical knock knock joke for you would go like this:

    Knock knock
    Who’s there?
    Shoe who?
Shoe coming out a tree bush pizza. (insert your uncontrollable laughter here.)

Needless to say, Mommy and Daddy gave you a joke book for valentine’s day and frequently google “kid jokes” to build your joke library! 🙂

You are a leader. Bethany follows you everywhere and does a lot of what you do (including telling stellar knock knock jokes!). You love Bethany with all your heart. Whenever you and I go shopping you almost always find something B needs or would want but you rarely ask for anything for yourself. Last night, you two were hugging so tight and saying you were best friends. You have no idea how happy it makes me to hear you two say those words. I pray you feel that way about each other forever!

You are so smart. Soo soo smart. Last night you were reading to me and a word stumped you. I can’t remember the last time a word stumped you. The word was rambunctious. Right now you really enjoy reading classic stories like “3 little pigs” and “Goldilocks”. You’ve have started reading the book to Bethany and then you guys put on little plays. Bethany is usually the big, bad wolf and you are all the little pigs.

You have really started asking questions about God and Jesus. I love your sweet question but I don’t always know the answers. “What’s God’s favorite flower? Does God like pizza?” If it’s raining you will say “Oh God must be waterin’ the flowers. That’s so nice of Him!” After church you will tell me about the “worshipin’ songs” you like to sing. Every Sunday, you get a sheet that has the story you read from the Jesus Storybook Bible and you will read that story over and over and over until the next Sunday. This week you have amazed me with several Bible verse you know. As much as I would like to say I taught you to memorize scripture, I think you learned them at your wonderful preschool! You LOVE singing “the B-I-B-L-E song and John 3:16.” You sing them constantly right now! SO precious!

Here is a little video of you making a “joyful noise” singing John 3:16

You truly are a blessing, Lane! I thank God daily for trusting us to be your parents. We love big boy!!

    Dollar Tree fun

About two weeks ago, Memaw and Pawpaw sent Lane and Bethany a card in the mail with $10 each to spend at Dollar Tree. 10 DOLLARS! That like $100 in their world! Needless to say they had a BLAST picking out 10 things each at the store.

We had to do a little persuading with Bethany. At on point she had a rather large planter in her basket. Haha!

Look how focused Lane was checking out. This is such serious business!

We came home and immediately spread everything out! Lane picked out some very neat things! He ended up with a butterfly net, silly string, silly glasses with a mustache, water balloons, a paintable piggybank, 3 decks of cards, a giant bubble want, prank toothpaste, grow-an-animal tablets, and a hula hoop!

Have you tried lately to take a picture of a 2 year old???

“B look at me and smile”
    “B look at me though!”
    “B, where’s mommy?”
Haha, finally got her looking at me!

She ended up with a lot of fun things too! She got a Blues Clues books, butterfly net, ball, giant bubble wand, clappy hand thing, Hot Air Balloon stain glass paint thing, 3 decks of cards, and 3 giant books of stickers! She wasted no time on playing with the stickers!
Lane and Chris enjoyed the silly glasses. Then we went outside to play with the silly string and bubbles!
Thank you so much Memaw and Papaw! They loved the receiving their very own mail and picking out 10 prizes! Wish you were here to play with us! We love you both!
